Lyndon Scaffolding black hat supervisor, Gavin Jones has been recognised for his commitment to safety by leading main contractor Kier Construction – receiving a ‘Safety Champion Award’ from Kier’s Western and Wales team, for his outstanding safety on the Croesyceiliog School project in Cwmbran South Wales.

Lyndon Scaffolding’s Regional SHEQ Manager, Mark Collinson said: “Gavin was dismantling and re-erecting floor slab edge protection on the perimeter of a steel frame building for the new school. He adopted a system of work whereby he installed the new edge protection inboard of the steels prior to dismantling the old edge protection. Despite this requiring a bit more setting up and additional equipment it meant that the scaffolders were protected from the risk of falls at all times and that other trades could continue to work in the area with only small local exclusion zones required as the work progressed.

“Gavin is a long-serving trusted member of our team who has won a number of awards from our clients over the years. He regularly delivers above expectation and is consistently recognised both internally and by our clients for his proactive and safety conscious approach. The award was well deserved, and Lyndon Scaffolding Regional Manager, Tony Mobey has also awarded Gavin with £50 in his pay packet in recognition of his extra efforts.”

Mark added: “It is good to be working with the Kier team on another project in South Wales. The site is very well run and very well organised, which is essential due to the adjacent live school. Kier are a top client and it’s always good to work with clients that share our core safety and quality values.”

Nick Hamersley, Site Manager for Kier Construction said: “Gavin has been so good, we want him back to erect a HAKI tower on the Sports Hall.”

The Croesyceiliog School project has a scaffold value of c£250K and is still in its early stages. The building is steel frame construction of a new school and sports hall and Lyndon are currently providing edge protection to floor edge and stairs, and some low-level lift pit scaffolds. Future works will include tube and fitting independent structures, birdcage scaffolds, HAKI loading towers and HAKI stair towers and tube and fitting lift shaft towers to full height. It is a straight forward temporary works job for Lyndon.

Currently, there are three operatives on the job, but this will rise to nine at the peak of the works, when there will be a significant amount of independent scaffolds being erected to the sports hall and school building, both internal and external for brickwork and blockwork. The scaffold works started at the end of June and are due to last 53 weeks.

In addition to Gavin’s Safety Champion Award, Lyndon are also currently top of the Kier Construction Site Safety League & SHE table.
